Puakea Ranch // Big Island of Hawaii

Many of my favorite places on the Big island of Hawaii are less than a typical Hawaiian daydream filled with Beaches, waves and white sand. Rather, I’m more intrigued with the areas inland layered with lush green fields, rolling hills, and beautiful big trees. Northern Big Island is so gorgeous, which is why we chose to marry in Waimea at Anna Ranch 3 years ago, and why we take every opportunity to re visit. Puakea Ranch was on my radar for a while and I had expressed to Andy that I would love to enjoy a staycation there sometime. Like a thoughtful partner he took my comment to heart and a few weeks later surprised me with a couple nights in Wally, their newest addition, an airstream trailer. The other lovely bungalows on the property are proper little homes away from home but I had never stayed in an airstream and being more “off the grid” was enticing. No tv, no internet, no cell phone coverage for a couple days was so refreshing and it had an outdoor shower which was surprisingly liberating. At one point I recognized a calm had washed over me because I’d let go of the urge to check in with the outside world or e-mail because I simply couldn’t. Instead we read, strolled the property, met the horses, took a dip in the secluded pool, picked herbs from the community garden and fresh eggs from the hens, made a bon fire and roasted marshmallows and star gazed. The ranch also hosts wedding and elopement celebrations for couples who are looking to do something a little outside of the typical Hawaii box. It’s my kind of place and I look forward to re visiting many more times.
